Stepping Up

Part of being a pro is having the confidence of knowing what needs to be done, and then doing it.  I am not speaking about the big sin of false pride here, rather about realizing that you are a professional and that you arrived where you are, not through cronyism or entitlement but on the abilities you've honed through time.  A pro assesses the current landscape and shifts priorities to take care of the immediate need, immediately.

In order to execute effectively, one must have several tools in their tool box, and the confidence to do what is not only necessary but right.  I am speaking here to you, the leader.  Especially to you who tremble in fear because you have a micro-manager over you.  You who know what is right and speak to your peers but never stand tall at the most critical moments.  You who tremble in fear of retaliation.

I have witnessed directors who spoke truth, only to shift away from the truth when the general manager arrived.  I have asked clients if they wished to hear the truth only to be told "No!"  I have written 40 page property assessments which were never passed up the chain because higher management "could not handle the truth."  It is at these times that I run my fingers through my thinning hair in frustration, knowing that these properties will never achieve their potential greatness while employing their current methods of operation.

I realize that this may be tough to hear.  Carefully choosing your battles is necessary for your long-term personal success but the long-term success of your organization remains paramount.  Choosing your personal battles, and the long-term success of your organization are not necessarily mutually exclusive.  But if you truly want to become a great leader, it is necessary to place the needs of the greater good over your own.

Is it tough? YES!  Might you loose a few jobs along the way? MOST CERTAINLY!  Will you experience a few sleepless nights?  MORE THAN A FEW!  Will you eventually find a healthy organization that respects and appreciates you?  NO PROMISES!  Will you be able to live with yourself, leave an indelible positive path for future leaders to follow, and if you have children teach them invaluable life lessons?  ABSOLUTELY!!!

From my experience in helping organizations, made of human beings, for almost two decades now I can tell you that just taking a check and being a "Yes Man" is easy money.  But I ask you, what is the price of selling your soul?

I have said it before and will most likely remind you again.  It will always be easy to do the right thing in the easy times.  Your test will come when everything is on the line and your choice is clear. Will you stand tall and do what is necessary and true?  Or will you shrink deeper into the hollows of spinelessness to make a buck?

If you want a consultant who is 100% committed to helping you set and achieve your goals, call me.  I won't tell you what you "want" to hear, but I will tell you what you need to hear... the TRUTH.
